Riding high for disabled

December 18th, 2006

The Evening Post online is packed full of information about organisations that meet regularly in the city - many of which may be new to you. You’ll find hundreds of local groups listed at the community section of www.thisisbristol.co.uk.

You’ll find details of a dozen groups here. Among them is the Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled. Here’s how it introduces itself to visitors to the Evening Post online: THE Avon Riding Centre, which leases acres of beautiful pasture and woodland opposite Blaise Castle Park, is to be found at Kings Weston Road, Henbury, Bristol.

Opened in 1983, the centre, with the help of hardworking and generous supporters, has continued to grow in both recognition and size.

The centre is one of the largest purpose-built RDA equestrian centres in the UK.

We are a registered charity, affiliated to the National Riding for the Disabled Association, and are self-funding. Therefore, to maintain the heavily subsidised disabled riding programmes, the centre offers tuition in flat work, jumping, schooling and hacking to able-bodied riders.

In addition, the arenas and the new conference area, already used for regional and national training, may be independently hired.

This is our silver jubilee year and we are celebrating it fully with as many events, open days and parties as we can possibly manage.

New park trails will welcome disabled

December 14th, 2006

By DAVID MARSH THE walks and trails at a new Leeds country park are undergoing an "access audit" to make sure they meet the needs of disabled people.

Leeds City Council’s parks and countryside officer has already checked the Kirkstall-Farnley trail in the West Leeds Country Park and similar work will be done on five other trails.

Coun Andrew Carter (Con, Calverley and Farsley), who chairs the West Leeds Country Park and Green Gateway Group, said: "I feel it is very important that this magnificent country park is available and accessible to all, so I am really pleased that the trails are being audited.

"Any necessary changes will be put in place to enable disabled users to pursue their hobbies and enjoy all the country park has to offer." He added: "Work is continuing to mark the circular trail and places of interest. More prominent improvements will be made including landscaping of parks and the refurbishment of playgrounds and skate parks." Once the audit is completed, leaflets detailing disabled access into the park will be produced..
