April 25th, 2007

E Yorks: East Riding Council has been praised for its positive approach to people with disabilities.

The council is to be presented with a certificate to recognise its commitment and allow it to use the Positive About Disablement symbol.

The Employment Service awards the symbol to employers who have taken action regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled employees.

Sue Lockwood, director of corporate resources at the council, said: “The council is committed to equal opportunities and fair treatment in all aspects of its employment practices.

“We hope this accreditation will continue to encourage applications from all members of our community and give confidence to disabled applicants.” Businesses who use the symbol have agreed to take action on five commitments that ensure disabled people are supported by employers and treated fairly at every stage of their selection of employment.
