Payback for ‘disabled’ runner
A Marathon runner who claimed he was disabled has been told he must pay GBP5,800 in six months or face losing all his assets.
Fraud investigators prosecuted Paul Appleby after catching him on camera running marathons.
The 47-year-old, of Park Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, was given ten months at Nottingham Crown Court last month.
And yesterday when he appeared in court he was ordered to pay the GBP5,800 - or face an additional six months in prison.
The Department of Work and Pensions said Appleby was running 10km races, half and full marathons.
After the case, a spokesman from the DWP said: “Benefit cheats take money intended for the most vulnerable in our society.” The Post reported last month that the jobless former miner was paid GBP22,300 over five years, even though his back condition improved.
Appleby had said he needed two walking sticks, a walking frame and a wheelchair when he claimed disability allowance in 1994.
But by 2001 investigators learned Appleby had joined athletics club Sutton Harriers in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
